About the Item

Small french bronze sculpture of Hippomenes mid-race, casting golden apples to distract Atalanta — a rare Grand Tour piece by the legendary Thiébaut Frères foundry. Titled “Hippomène Lanceur De Pommes D’Or”, this dynamic composition captures the moment from Greek mythology where Hippomenes wins a footrace — and Atalanta's hand — by invoking Aphrodite’s help. The goddess gave him three enchanted apples to slow Atalanta’s pace. As he cast each apple, she paused in fascination, allowing him to take the lead and secure victory. Unmarked but attibuted to the “Fumière et Cie', where Thiébaut Frères foundry operated under this name. This period marked the twilight of one of France’s greatest bronze ateliers, renowned for its technical mastery and classical themes. Mounted on a veined green marble base, the bronze has a rich patina and finely detailed drapery and musculature, highlighting the movement and intensity of the scene. A must-have for collectors of Grand Tour bronzes, neoclassical art, or mythological subjects.
