About the Item
A superb quality bronze sculpture of Cupid with his bow by the renowned French artist Gustave Doré, made in Paris, France, c. 1876.
Entitled ‘Amour lançant une flèche’ in French, the patinated bronze sculpture depicts Cupid as a cherub or putto holding a bow outstretched, seemingly having just released his arrow. He sits on a naturalistic mound before a wooden fence with organic fronds at his feet – most probably suggesting that love can strike anywhere, no matter how humble the setting. To the lower right at the front of the sculpture it is signed ‘G. Doré’.
Gustave Doré (Strasbourg 1832 - 1883 Paris) was one of the most celebrated Romantic artists in France in the 19th century. Born in Strasbourg in 1832, he became renowned as a printmaker and engraver, illustrating many of the most popular publications of the era including Dante’s Divine Comedy, Balzac, Milton, Rabelais, and the works of Lord Byron. His works sat firmly in the Romantic tradition whilst also meeting with early Symbolism, both of which can be seen in this sculpture.
Works by Gustave Doré appear in many of the most important museum collections worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Getty Museum, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and Musee D’Orsay in Paris, who in 2023 acquired his sculpture ‘La Parque et l'Amour’ for their permanent collection.
The sculpture also bears the foundry mark on its reverse for ‘Thiébaut Frères Fondeurs Paris’. Thiébaut Frères were one of the most illustrious foundries in France and worked to exacting standards and with many of the most important artists including Auguste Rodin. Some of their notable works in France include the statues of Léopold and Charles Morice in the Monument à la République in the place de la République in Paris; Francisque Duret’s ‘Saint Michel terrassant le démon’ in the fountain at place Saint-Michel in Paris; and Auguste Cain’s Lionnes du Sahara before the Porte des Lions of the Louvre. In the USA, Gustave Doré’s Vase, in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco was also cast by Thiébaut Frères.
The bronze Cupid sits on its original rouge marble plinth, lined with felt to the base. The plinth has some small nicks to its edges, none of which are serious, and all of which are testament to the sculpture’s age and beautiful original condition.
