About the Item
Rare and superb examples of high style Art Deco sculpture, this pair of terracotta figures depict Harlequin (Arlequin in French) and Columbine (Colombine), each bathed in a glossy black glaze that gathers and reflects the light. A very old legend tells the story of Harlequin and his love for Columbine, which is frustrated for a time until love wins out. The story is a variation of commedia dell'arte, a form of Italian comic theater with masked characters. The artist was Genvane, whose work is rare, and who collaborated with the famed Longwy firm in the 1920s. The pieces are each titled and signed.
