Hercules Lichas, Grand Tour Italian Patinated Bronze Group, Antonio Canova

About the Item

An Italian patinated bronze figural group depicting Hercules and Lichas, after the model by Antonio Canova (1757–1822). The base is incised “Canova Roma,”. The composition is based on Canova’s marble masterpiece first exhibited in 1815 and later housed at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome (the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome). This version was likely cast in the late 19th century, as part of the wide dissemination of Canova’s celebrated models. The sculpture presents the muscular figure of Hercules in the act of flinging Lichas into the sea, captured at the apex of the motion. Hercules is shown standing astride a lion’s pelt, with one arm raised above his head and the other grasping Lichas by the ankle. The lion-skin beneath him, the knotted club resting behind, and the rectangular plinth anchoring Lichas’s form are integral to the narrative structure. Lichas’s figure, nude and contorted, is suspended upside-down, his hand gripping the plinth and his body curved back in dynamic tension. The base is rectangular with beveled corners and includes naturalistic ground texture throughout. Antonio Canova’s original marble was commissioned by Prince Eugène de Beauharnais and completed in Rome between 1795 and 1815. The model was widely admired for its anatomical detail and dramatic energy, and was soon replicated in both marble and bronze for collectors. Canova’s Roman studio frequently produced plaster casts for authorized reproductions. This bronze was most likely cast in a Roman foundry that specialized in 19th-century reductions of neoclassical models, using the lost-wax method with a rich brown patination typical of the era.
