About the Item

Immaculate. Carved and polychrome wood. Spanish school, 18th century. Female figure dressed in a white tunic and a blue mantle gathered over one shoulder, with long, loose hair (falling in wavy strands down the back), hands joined in a prayer gesture in front of the chest, and standing on a heap of clouds in which the heads of angels and the peaks of the crescent moon appear, arranged upwards. The polychrome wood carving stands on a simple rectangular base with downward-sloping corners. This work is inspired by a model that has been very common since its creation in 1655: it is the one known as the Inmaculada del lectern, a work by Alonso Cano (Granada, 1601-1667) that is kept in the sacristy of the cathedral of Granada (Spain). ). This model would survive in the work of Pedro de Mena and in the Mora family during the 17th century, but it is also followed by outstanding masters of the 18th century such as José Risueño, Pedro Duque Cornejo (Inmaculada Concepción, Abadía del Sacro Monte de Granada, Museo , about 1725), etc. Compare, for example, with the carving of the Madrid monastery of Las Descalzas attributed to Pedro de Mena, or with that of the parish church of Santa Cruz de Pampaneria in Granada (circle or workshop of Diego de Mora, late 17th century or early 18th century), etc. · Size: 22x18x65 cm.
