About the Item

Italian Grand Tour Terracotta of a “Fauno Danzante con Cimbali” Circa 1860 This finely modeled 19th-century terracotta sculpture depicts a dancing faun (satyr) in exuberant motion, playing a pair of cymbals (cimbali) in his right hand while pressing with his foot upon a kroupézion, a small percussion instrument strapped to the foot. The faun’s lively pose and spirited expression capture the vitality and rhythm of ancient Dionysian revels. The present work is a Grand Tour reproduction, executed with great fidelity to the ancient Roman or Hellenistic marble original housed in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Its dimensions and modeling closely follow those of the original, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship achieved by 19th-century Italian artisans. During the Grand Tour period (mid-17th to late-19th centuries), such reproductions of classical and Hellenic sculptures were highly sought after by travelers and collectors eager to bring home tangible souvenirs of antiquity. In Naples, two important ceramic workshops—Giustiniani and De Vecchio—specialized in the production of terracotta works inspired by ancient art. These ateliers produced not only decorative wares such as plates, tureens, and vases adorned with classical motifs, but also faithful replicas of famous museum sculptures, destined to ornament the villas and gardens of cultured patrons across Europe.
