About the Item

A handsome and high quality Italian 19th century Neo-Classical st. patinated Bronze and Portoro marble statue of Aeneas, Lausus, and Mezentius. This impressive statue is raised on a scalloped Portoro marble base mimicking the shape of the bronze above. Standing on a ground like terrain is the handsome Trojan Hero Aeneas wearing a flowing cape and with his sword and shield to each side. On the ground to the opposite side is the Etruscan King Mezentius with his sword drawn and poised to defend his fallen son Lausus. Described in Virgil's Aeneid, Book X, though outmatched, Lausus stands his ground and is killed by Aeneas. Struck by the boy’s bravery and youth, Aeneas immediately feels remorse and honors his fallen enemy. Grief-stricken and ashamed, Mezentius returns to the battlefield seeking revenge, only to be slain by Aeneas as well. All original patina throughout.
