About the Item
An Italian Bronze Figure of the Dancing Faun After the Antique depicted standing ‘in contrapposto’ and raised on a Louis XVI style ormolu mounted porphyry and red marble base.
The Dancing Faun is one of the most famous antiquities in Florence, where it can be found in the Tribuna of the Uffizi. Although it is first recorded in 1665, in a book by Rubens' son Albert, there is evidence to indicate that the sculpture was in the Grand Ducal collections as early as the 16th century. The head and arms, which likely date to this period, were once said to have been restored by Michelangelo. The ancient sculpture itself is thought to be a 3rd-century copy of a bronze Greek original. Copies of Greco-Roman statuary such as this one were popular among wealthy art collectors who wanted their own versions of ancient art seen during their travels in Europe and Greece, on what was known as the "grand tour."
This faun holds metal cymbala in his hands and wears a kroupezion attached to his sandal. The latter is a device with a metal plate that would have made a noise rather like a modern tap shoe. His faunlike features are visible in the tiny horns above his forehead, and in the small goat's tail at his rear. His head is bent over, absorbed in the music, and every muscle of his athletic body, from his deltoid muscles, his abdomen, to his calves, appears tense as he plays.
The present beautifully cast example of the model can be admired for its finely chased surface with darkened patina, convincing anatomy and musculature, and well-defined details including the hair and hands. Its quality is emphasized by the rarity and value of the materials used for its base, in particular porphyry, along with gilt bronze and marble.
