About the Item

Italian Large Bronze Relief of the Madonna and Child, Saint John, and Saint Elizabeth After Pierino da Vinci (Italian, c. 1530–1553) Circa 1850 This finely cast 19th-century bronze relief reproduces the celebrated 16th-century marble sculpture by Pier Francesco di Bartolomeo, called Pierino da Vinci, the gifted nephew of Leonardo da Vinci. The original marble, formerly in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence (inv. no. 59), was among the artworks looted by German forces during World War II and remains unrecovered to this day. The present bronze plaque closely matches the dimensions of the lost marble, suggesting that it may have been cast directly from the original during the mid-19th century, a period when reproductions of Renaissance masterpieces were highly prized among collectors and museums. The relief depicts the Madonna and Child accompanied by Saint John the Baptist and Saint Elizabeth, rendered with the delicate modeling and refined emotional expression characteristic of Pierino da Vinci’s short but influential career.
