About the Item

Measuring over six feet tall, this life-sized statue is a wonderful depiction of the Roman goddess, Flora. Supported by a circular pedestal with a diameter of 22 ½ inches and a thick cavetto cornice, our Italian limestone statue has a beautiful patina of light gray, ochre, and white, accompanied by some brown moss and lichen accumulation. Flora is depicted sitting on a tree stump, with a wicker basket overflowing with flowers on her raised right knee. Behind Flora’s left leg is a large acanthus leaf with a ballflower that is affixed to the textured stump. The details of Flora’s gown are incredible, such as the gathered fabric and the laces of her corset top. Her long, flowing hair is knotted in a bun, tucked under a large tiara. In Roman mythology, Flora is not frequently referenced, although she is an important figure. Known as the goddess of flowers and spring, Flora had her own “cult” led by a flamen (priest). Flora was also essential to youth and fertility and was romantically linked to Zephyr, the wind god, all common themes associated with spring.
