About the Item
This is a small Jizo Bodhisattva statue believed to have been made in the late Edo period (19th century). It is believed to be made of granite.
Its rough texture exudes a gentle aura. Its compact dimensions are 8.6cm wide x 7cm deep x 28.3cm high, and it weighs 2.5kg. It's easy to handle and blends seamlessly into modern spaces.
Jizo Bodhisattva is a particularly beloved deity in Japan, worshipped as a protector of children and a guide for travelers and lost spirits. This compassionate Buddha, who places himself in a world of suffering and saves people, has been enshrined at village crossroads, along mountain paths, in temples, and within villages, providing a companion to the local people.
Judging from its expression and weathering, it appears that it was placed outdoors or under a eaves rather than indoors. While there is surface wear, this is evident from the fact that the sculpture remains intact.
Furthermore, depending on the shape and posture, they may have also served as "Dosojin" (roadside gods). Dosojin are considered guardian deities of the road and boundaries, warding off external disasters and protecting villages and homes. They are also often enshrined at crossroads and entrances.
This statue's appeal lies in its simple, warm sculptural expression. The traces of human hands give it a gentle presence that soothes the viewer's soul.
The smooth base allows it to stand on its own. By discreetly placing it on an indoor shelf, in the entrance hall, on a veranda, or in a corner of the courtyard, you can bring a quiet, prayerful atmosphere into your daily life.
