This is a stone statue of Kannon Bosatsu (the Bodhisattva of Compassion), believed to have been made in Japan during the mid to late Edo period (late 18th century onward). The material is likely a type of natural andesite, and its calm, weathered texture suggests that it had been placed outdoors for many years. Japanese stone Buddhas come in a wide range of styles, from realistic and finely detailed carvings to more primitive forms rooted in folk belief. This piece belongs to the latter category and features a soft, approachable expression. The proportions are charmingly balanced, with a slightly oversized head and relatively small hands and feet. The figure wears a simple crown and robe, which have been carefully and modestly carved. On the back, unlike many Japanese stone statues where a large, boat-shaped mandorla is carved as a backdrop to the figure, this particular piece has its entire back thoughtfully and clearly sculpted. The front facial features are warm and serene, giving a peaceful, gentle impression that seems to calm the hearts of those who view it. This statue was originally part of a private Japanese collection and has been carefully preserved over the years. There is a small chip on the lower right side and a superficial linear crack on the back of the head, but neither affects the statue’s structural integrity, and there are no issues for daily display or installation. Its height is moderate, making it well-suited for placement in a garden or inside the home without overpowering the space.
