About the Item
This is a small stone Buddha statue, a "seated Tathagata," created around the 19th century, during the late Edo period in Japan. Stone Buddha statues are scattered throughout Japan, and from those enshrined in temples to village entrances, mountain paths, pondsides, and even small shrines, their presence has been deeply connected to people's lives and prayers. Erected to pray for safe travels, protect the community, and to commemorate the souls of the deceased, these statues appear to have been close and important objects of worship for the common people.
This work is a small example of this stone Buddha, and is rare in the form of a seated Tathagata. While Kannon Bodhisattva and Jizo Bodhisattva are common, Tathagata statues are rare, making this a valuable addition to any collection. With a calm and gentle expression and hands clasped quietly in front of the chest, it soothes the viewer's mind and brings a moment of tranquility.
Over the years, the stone has been exposed to wind and rain, causing natural wear to the surface. However, this adds a deeper charm, evoking a sense of the accumulation of time that goes beyond a simple old stone statue. The gentle expression that emerges from the stone's texture truly embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi.
At just 20cm wide, 10.5cm deep, and 26.8cm high, it's easy to handle, and weighs just 5.85kg, making it light enough to hold in one hand. This makes it suitable for stable placement in entryways, gardens, and eaves, as well as in collection rooms and indoor display shelves. Even in small spaces, it doesn't feel oppressive; rather, its presence elevates the atmosphere, creating a quiet place for prayer.
Stone Buddha statues are often placed outdoors, and one of their greatest attractions is the aging process that occurs as they are exposed to wind and rain. This Buddha statue is no exception, possessing a unique texture and vitality that only comes from the passage of time. Even in modern spaces, this statue will exude a unique presence and add depth when paired with dry interiors and modern furnishings.
This small seated Buddha statue conveys a glimpse of Japanese history and faith. More than just a decorative piece, we hope you will incorporate it into your daily life as a form of prayer that connects the past and the present.

Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This seated stone statue of Jizo Bodhisattva, unique to Sado Island (Niigata Prefecture), is believed to have been created during the Edo period. Sado Island is home to a small Jizo hall known as "Nashi-no-ki Jizo," where numerous stone Buddha statues, dedicated by people since the Edo period, have been enshrined. The sight of stone Buddha statues, nearly filling the entire ground, conveys the daily prayers and wishes of the people of that time, as well as their sincere desires for the growth of their children and recovery from illness. It is highly likely that this work was one of these "migawari Jizo."
What is Migawari Jizo?
Sado Island's Jizo worship is based on the concept of "migawari Jizo." This belief is based on the belief that Jizo statues...
