About the Item

This is a wooden Jizo Bodhisattva statue made in the late Edo period in Japan. It is thought that they were not carved by Buddhist sculptors living in central cities such as Kyoto or Edo, but by local pilgrims, carpenters, and craftsmen who made wooden dolls. Therefore, the Buddha statue itself is not carved using traditional carving techniques that have been passed down since ancient times, but the balance of the body of the Buddha statue is carved using the unique techniques of the sculptor himself, so the unique balance of the body and facial expressions are expressed. However, the face and other parts are carefully sculpted as if to express a prayer. Is beautiful. It's shiny because it's been touched so many times. Unlike Buddha images housed in large temples, these images are kept in houses or in small village halls, so these images are blackened by soot and shiny from friction when dust is wiped off. It was probably placed there to be close to people's hearts. Both hands are missing. The front part of the left foot has been jointed and sculpted. The front part of the left foot was probably made that way from the beginning. Because high-quality wood was expensive, it is thought that there were times when it was not possible to prepare a perfect square lumber. This is truly a wonderful piece with clear age and a nice patina to it. Very unique. We have not seen another quite like it.
