About the Item

Hand-carved free-standing Japanese Fisherman Figurine. Okimono is a Japanese term meaning for display as an art or decorative object. Figure is a smiling man dressed in traditional clothing of the period holding a woven basket. Figure rests on an flat irregular oval base. This piece is well executed and retains all of the original patina of over 100 years old. Figures of fisherman were especially popular, symbolizing prosperity, perseverance, and harmony with nature. The smiling expression conveys good fortune and contentment, themes deeply rooted in Japanese cultural traditions. In today's interiors, antique Japanese okimono make striking sculptural accents in both traditional and contemporary interiors. The figure can be displayed on a console, bookshelf, or in a glass cabinet. It pairs beautifully with minimalist decor, Asian inspired interiors, or curated collections of fine objects, serving as a refined focal point and conversation piece.
