About the Item
This magnificent and iconic French Art Deco sculpture, circa 1930, titled "The Blacksmith" (Le Forgeron), is signed G. Hervor, a known pseudonym for the highly regarded French sculptor Jean de Roncourt (1893–1953).
The piece is executed in patinated spelter (régule), which displays a beautiful original green patina simulating aged bronze verdigris, contrasting dramatically with the sleek, polished black marble base.
The composition captures a powerful, semi-nude male figure in a dramatic, athletic pose, kneeling as he prepares to deliver a blow with a hammer to a curved iron rod, powerfully embodying the dynamism, heroic male form, and industrial strength celebrated during the Art Deco era.
This quintessential example of 20th-century decorative art makes a striking architectural statement and is a sought-after piece from an artist famed for his robust figurative works.

Located in Ixelles, BE
- The Artwork:
This sculpture by Jean de Roncourt embodies a striking dramatic tension through the figure of an archer in full action. Kneeling, with a taut torso and prominent muscles, the man draws his bow in a gesture of controlled power. The dynamic, almost choreographic posture reveals a perfect knowledge of human anatomy, typical of the Art Deco movement to which de Roncourt belonged. The grey-patinated spelter confers an antique nobility...
