About the Item

A large 18th century Italian white statuary marble portrait medallion from the workshop of Orazio Marinali (1643-1720). One of two similar marble medallions we are selling, this piece is handcarved with a profile portrait of a bearded neoclassical gentleman wearing a cap and gazing to the left. Attributed to the Marinali workshops, this white marble plaque is a fascinating sculptural piece. It is larger in scale than other marble medallions we have encountered and showcases deep relief carving with makers markings throughout including tooling marks to the reverse. Orazio Marinali (1643-1720) Born in Angarano, Orazio Marinali was the leading member of a notable family of 17th and early 18th century Venetian sculptors. The family chiefly specialised in religious works and established a workshop in Vicenza, near Venice. Orazio studied under baroque Flemish sculptor, Josse de Corte (1627-1679). Orazio's pieces are celebrated for capturing deep emotional intensity and showcases his skill with carving anatomy, the exaggerated form of the ear a trademark of his works. This Greek bust depicts the legendary poet and author Homer who is presumed to have penned the two of ancient Greece’s most epic poems: the Iliad and the Odyssey. Scholars are uncertain whether or not Homer actually existed but if he in fact did exist, Homer would be regarded as one of the greatest literary artists of his time. This is an iconic statue for an interior and looks particularly impactful when placed on a column or plinth. Please note the blue plinth...
