Large antique figurative sculptural lamp by Grégoire
French, Late 19th Century
Lamp: Height 129cm, width 42cm, depth 40cm
Base: Height 76cm, width 43cm, depth 43cm
Overall: Height 205cm, width 43cm, depth 43cm
This impressive antique combines a beautifully sculpted bronze lamp with a later mahogany pedestal, creating a statement of elegance and craftsmanship. The rectangular pedestal, with its panelled sides, serves as a complementary base, enhancing the rich tones of the patinated bronze while adding a sense of stature to the overall design.
Atop the pedestal, the lamp features a semi-clad female figure, masterfully sculpted from bronze. Her flowing drapery clings to her form as she steps forward gracefully on one leg, arms raised high above her head. She holds three delicate foliate branches that serve as light fittings, one of which is adorned with a small swallow, blending classical themes with elements of nature. This interplay between the idealised human form and the natural world evokes a sense of harmony and beauty.
The bronze figure is mounted on a naturalistic base, which sits on a moulded black marble plinth, providing a contrast of materials and textures. The combination of smooth black marble, rich mahogany, and patinated bronze adds depth and visual interest to the piece.
Signed "L. Grégoire" on the front of the bronze base, the sculpture is the work of Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840-1890), a renowned French sculptor known for his Academic-style works. Grégoire frequently exhibited at the Paris Salon, and his works often featured classical figures rendered with exquisite detail and grace. The back of the base bears the retailer’s mark: ‘BY APPOINTMENT TO THE QUEEN. BELLMAN, IVY
CARTER, NEW BOND ST, LONDON, MADE IN FRANCE,.
The intricate craftsmanship and harmonious blend of materials make this sculptural lamp an outstanding example of 19th-century decorative art.

French Figural Statue
By Mathurin Moreau
Located in New Orleans, LA
This extraordinary and monumental cast-iron sculpture was likely specially commissioned to the Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne for an important public or private collection. Designed by celebrated Parisian sculptor Mathurin Moreau, the striking work takes the form of a beautiful young maiden clad in classical robes with an amphora gracefully held aloft in one hand. The work displays a remarkable level of detail considering its iron casting, including a wreath of laurel leaves atop the woman's head and a stunning necklace adorning her neck.
Due to its large size and subject matter, the remarkable work would most probably have been exhibited in a public or private fountain, garden, estate or hotel. French cast-iron sculptures such as this one were historically preferred over bronze for outdoor decorations...

Located in New York, US
Our extraordinary patinated bronze torchiere depicting a female slave comes from the firm of Lacarrière Frères & Delatours. Signed "Lacarrière Freres & Delatours", "Paris 1880". Fitted for electricity in the late nineteenth century, but currently in need of sockets and wiring. Provenance: Rochelle Sepenuk, New York, NY.
The firm of Auguste Lacarrière sent exhibits to the the first International Exhibition in London in 1851. At that time they seem to have occupied two Paris addresses, 9 rue St Elizabeth and 55 rue Meslay, as well as having another outlet in Limoges. They are recorded as showing "specimens of lustres, sconces, chandeliers, medallions, etc..". By the 1862 Exhibition they were only recorded at the Sainte Elizabeth address and showed, "appareils à gaz de fonte, de zinc et de bronze." Nevertheless, their exhibit was highly praised and the business, now called A. Lacarrière, Père et Fils...
