About the Item

A powerful and expressive large-scale sculpture by Erik Höglund (1932-98), one of Sweden’s most influential postwar artists. Hand-carved from solid pinewood and boldly painted, this striking work exemplifies Höglund’s raw, experimental approach to form and surface during the 1950s. The sculpture presents an abstracted, totemic human figure, carved with deliberate tool marks that remain clearly visible, emphasizing the physical act of making. Broad planes and faceted contours give the form a monumental presence, while the vivid hand-applied paint—deep reds, earthy browns, inky blues, and black graphic accents—creates a rhythmic, almost primal visual language. The painted surface interacts with the natural grain of the pine, allowing the wood to remain an active and expressive element of the composition. Characteristic of Höglund’s early sculptural work, the piece balances figuration and abstraction, conveying a sense of quiet intensity and introspection. It stands as both a sculptural object and an emotional statement, embodying the artist’s rejection of refined modernism in favor of something more instinctive and human. A rare and highly collectible example of Scandinavian modern sculpture, this work would serve as a commanding focal point in a curated interior, gallery setting, or serious private collection. There is reason to ask ourselves whether we have fully understood the greatness of Erik Höglund. His name, of course, appears in surveys of 20th-century Swedish design — particularly when it comes to glass, but also regarding furniture and other applied arts. Yet it may be only now that historians and the so-called market have begun to see this idiosyncratic designer’s works with a truly clear eye. PROVENANCE: From Erik Höglund's own home between the years 1953-1967.
