About the Item
Scale model, of Ligurian manufacture from the late 19th century, depicting a two-masted schooner. The vessel is characterized by auric masting, mainsail and counter-mainsail sails, a pronounced bowsprit and a slender hull, elements typical of cargo schooners used for deep-sea fishing, light cargo transport and cabotage navigation. Bon état. Measurements 70 x 1 2 x 56 cm - 27.5 x 4.7 x 22 in.
The schooner originally was a warship, often employed by sailors in the Mediterranean, particularly the Ottomans, Venetians and Genoese. Its relatively small and fast shape made it ideal for activities such as piracy, patrolling and raiding. The schooners had a good balance between cargo capacity, maneuverability and speed, making them perfect for quick missions and sudden attacks. Over the centuries, the schooner evolved and became more versatile, adapting to civilian as well as military uses. In the 19th century, as European naval powers began to modernize their fleets, the schooner became a type of ship increasingly used for light cargo transport, patrol activities, and even as a pleasure craft.
Ship modeling has ancient origins and originated for religious reasons. Not content with the banality of his own life, the man wished to project another-eternal-life into an afterlife that, to be reached, symbolically required a means of transportation: a boat to cross a river. The oldest known model is a silver vessel about sixty centimeters in length, found in excavations in Ur, Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), and dates back to 2000 BCE.
