FRENCH BRONZE SCULPTURE OF DAVID BY LOUIS AUGUSTE MOREAU Exhibited at Salon 1891, signed "L. Moreau" with faint double impression appearing to be "Tiffany Co", Sealed verso "L U 9" An exceedingly fine casting of Louis Auguste Moreau's model of David, this sculpture stands a full 29" high, making it a clear strike point for any room it becomes a part of. David stands proudly, the end of his sling wrapped around his wrist and hangs from his clenched fist holding a single large flat stone. His face is calm and composed, but his features are defiant as he is preparing to confront his adversary. This is a rare model, originally presented by Louis Auguste Moreau at Salon in 1891 and cast through the end of the century. The signature has two faint stamped impressions above it, both appearing to read Tiffany Co; this would not have been the foundry, but rather the retailer if it does in fact read as such. The base was crafted to rest on a raised dowel of a pedestal, allowing it to spin freely and display all angles of the sculpture without difficulty. For any collector of Romantic sculpture, this is a very fine bronze model of unreal detail and skilled finishing work. Literature and Further Reading: Bronzes of the Nineteenth Century, Kjellberg, p. 510-11 Measurements: 29" H x 12" D x 16 1/2" W; 10" base diameter Condition Report: Heavily worn patina, discolored between lower and upper half - probably from improper cleaning. Some touch ups to patina loss in his face using a dark pitch, other areas of patina loss to cheeks, inner thigh. Impression to chest and jaw, abrasion to edge of pointing hand. Overall a very fine sculpture, though the variation in patina is something to look at carefully - it is a delicate patina, being a combination of painting and acid patination; it is likely a prior owner did not understand this and cleaned the upper half a bit too harshly. Being a rather old cleaning and polished under wax, the effect is actually rather attractive and we would certainly not recommend repatinating the sculpture. A large and very striking work.
