About the Item
Exceptional large votive altar, a 'fine sculptural work of art from the Baroque period.
Handcrafted in 17th-century Italy was probably inside a church or rich private chapel.
It depicts a multitude of Putti, Cherubim, and winged figures intertwining in a 'single dramatic and dynamic composition topped by a dove representing the Holy Spirit.
The complexity of the sculpture suggests a 'work of high Italian manufacture, and the opulent, complex, and detailed style is typical of the Baroque period.
The sculpture is made of wood with mecha gilding and consists of a central plane , once intended to house relics and monstrances, and a tall vertical back in which a flap is hidden.
A 'one-of-a-kind work of the highest workmanship and the ultimate expression of Italian craftsmanship.
