About the Item

Mary Magdalene Penitent. Carved and polychrome wood. Spanish school, towards the end of the 17th century. Polychrome wood carving that shows a young woman with long hair dressed in a mat tied around her waist, one hand on her chest and the other stretched forward, looking at it (or whatever that hand would have had, surely a Christ Crucified); It has been placed on a base worked to look like rocks, and a human skull has been placed on it. This sculpture is based on a very common model in Spanish Baroque sculpture (more in the Castilian school than in the Andalusian one) and which was popularized by Pedro de Mena. In 1663 the master was commissioned to create a Penitent Magdalena for the Professed House of the Jesuits in Madrid (inspired by another conserved, at least since 1615, in the Convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid, related to the production of Gregorio Fernández), which he made when he returned to Malaga in 1664 and is today in the National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid. The model was so successful that numerous examples of other masters following it have been preserved (already in different sizes): Penitent Magdalena attributed to Tomás de Sierra (late 17th century, church of San Miguel and San Julián de Valladolid), another attributed to Juan of Ávila and/or Juan Antonio de la Peña (end of the 17th century, church of Santa María da María da Assunção, Bragança), the carving of the church of San Bartolomé in Pontevedra dated in the 18th century, the “interpretation” of Luis Salvador Carmona for a carving of Santa María Egipcíaca for the chapel of the Angel in the Convent of Trinitarios Descalzos in Madrid (today in the National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid), etc. · Size: 31x25x75 cm.
