Massive retired Lladro porcelain sculpture entitled "Venus Cupid" (#01011392) issued in 1981 and retired in 1987. This rare and gorgeous sculpture is #647 out of 750 limited edition pieces produced. The piece is signed by J. Ruiz, its painter and Juan Huerta its sculptor and has a light green, light brown and white. matte finish; it was handmade in Spain. The sculpture measures 23.5" H x 9" D x 15" W and weighs approximately 25 pounds. This figurine is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. It comes with original wood base. #1475 It depicts a popular Roman myth when during play time with her son, Cupid, Venus inadvertently pricks herself with a Cupid's arrow and immediately falls in love with demigod Adonis, the first man she meets following this prick. According to Roman mythology, goddess Venus, born of sea-foam was a symbol of femininity, beauty and womanhood, essential to regeneration of human life. Her male companion and husband was god of war, Mars, active and fiery. Cupid, most often regarded as the son of Venus and Mars was the god of desire, and love. He is frequently portrayed as a playful and mischievous toddler-cherub with wings, bow and arrows stocked in his quiver (portable satchel behind his back). It is these arrows that represent the source of his power: a person, or even a deity, who is pierced or even scratched with Cupid's arrow is filled with desire and love. Venus accidentally became the very first victim inadvertently pricked by Cupid's arrow from Cupid's quiver when the two of them were playing in the garden in the figurine, sunny Venus is adorned with her symbols, roses she wears as a crown and myrtles as a necklace. Myrtles were cultivated by Greeks and Romans for their rosy-white, sweetly scented flowers, and aromatic, evergreen leaves.
