About the Item

Regency Grandeur: Monumental 2-Foot Tall Staffordshire Figure of Venus Circa 1810 An exceptionally rare and massive Staffordshire pearlware pottery figure of Venus (the Roman goddess of love and beauty), dating to circa 1810. Standing over two feet tall, this figure represents the pinnacle of large-scale early 19th-century English earthenware modeling. The figure depicts Venus rising from the "foam of the sea" (represented by a stylized, swirling mound at the base). She is superbly modeled with a serene classical expression and is richly enameled in a vibrant, saturated palette. She wears a floor-length gown of deep manganese-purple, edged in bright green, with a high Empire waistline typical of Regency fashion. She holds a matching purple drapery in her left hand, while her right hand is raised to her chest. This model is of great rarity; only one other example is widely documented (in the Berlin Collection), and that example is much simpler in decoration. The rich, full-color enameling on this piece makes it a standout survivor. Condition: Excellent antique condition. Remarkable for a figure of this size and complexity to survive without significant damage. The enamels remain vivid and no restoration noted to the neck or extremities (often vulnerable points on large figures). Measurements: Height: 24 1/4 inches (61.60 cm) Width: 8 1/2 inches (21.59 cm) Depth: 8 inches (20.32 cm) Historical Context: During the Regency period (c. 1810–1820), Staffordshire potters produced large-scale figures to emulate the look of classical marble statuary for the domestic interior. While figures of Faith, Hope, and Charity are relatively common, mythological subjects of this specific scale are incredibly scarce. The modeling reflects the Neoclassical ideal, blending ancient iconography (the sea foam birth) with contemporary Georgian fashion (the hairstyle and dress cut). Literature Reference: Myrna Schkolne, Staffordshire Figures 1780-1840: Family, Friendship, Play, Classical Subjects, Vol. 4: See Page 186, Figure 194.37. Comparative Note: The example illustrated by Schkolne (from the Arnold and Barbara Berlin Collection) is painted only with scattered flowers on a white ground. The present example, with its full purple and green robes, is a significantly richer and more dramatic variation. (Ref: NY10280-kkri)

18th-Century English Pottery Hearty Good Fellow Toby Jug
Located in Downingtown, PA
"The Hearty Good Fellow": Rare Standing Pearlware Toby Jug (Staffordshire, c. 1800) A charismatic and vibrant English pearlware "Toby" jug, modeled in the scarce form known to collectors as the "Hearty Good Fellow." Dating to circa 1800, this piece represents a delightful departure from the standard seated Toby jug, depicting the figure in a standing, convivial pose. The figure is modeled with a distinct sense of movement, his head turned slightly to the left. He is dressed in the height of Georgian tavern fashion: a deep cobalt blue jacket, a bright orange waistcoat, and vivid yellow breeches. Under his right arm, he supports a large white ale jug, while his left hand holds a pipe across his chest. Reverse & Construction: The reverse reveals a robust rustic branch handle that extends downward into a molded tree-stump support. This integral support was a clever potter's device to stabilize the standing figure during firing. Both the handle and the rocky base are left in plain white pearlware—an unusual variation (as most examples feature green or brown painted bases)—which highlights the crispness of the molding. Condition: Good antique condition. Typical minor flaking to the glaze on the rim of the tricorn hat...
