About the Item
Bronze Sculpture by Mayemba (1946-), Congo, 2002. This striking bronze sculpture by the Congolese artist Mayemba (1946-) features two African women with trays, capturing a powerful expression of cultural heritage and traditional life. Created in 2002, this sculpture is a rare example of Mayemba's work, highlighting his exceptional talent and distinctive style. The piece is mounted on a wooden base, possibly palmwood, adding a natural contrast to the polished bronze figures.
The sculpture is signed and dated "Mayemba RDC 2002" and is also located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as indicated in the photographs. Its dimensions are 15.75" (33 cm) in height, 6.9" (16 cm) in width, and 8.3" (14.5 cm) in depth.
Mayemba was born in Lemfu on January 19, 1946, and began his artistic studies in Kinshasa, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Over the years, he built a prolific career in various artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, and design. After studying in Belgium and working as a cameraman and head of cameramen at the national television station, Mayemba continued his education in fine arts and decoration, ultimately earning advanced degrees.
Throughout his career, Mayemba participated in numerous exhibitions in both Congo and abroad, including in Paris and Lausanne. He is also known for collaborating on major public art projects, such as mosaics, ceramic friezes, and copper works in Kinshasa and Brussels. His works remain highly regarded for their craftsmanship and the way they encapsulate the spirit of Congolese culture and artistic expression.
