About the Item

A very stylish art deco pottery sculpture of winged putti attributed to renowned sculptor and ceramicist Michael Powolny (Austrian, 1871-1954) and dating from around 1920. Michael Powolny was an eminent figure in the arts in Austria. He was inspired and learned pottery from his father before studying ceramics at the Vienna Industrial Arts School in Znaim, Austria in 1894 and spent many years at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 1906, along with artist Bertold Löffler, he formed the Wiener Keramik workshop which later was to become the Wiener Werkstatte. His work is considered both influential and important and is held in museum collections around the world. This delightful figure created in terracotta clay has an unglazed finish and portrays a standing winged boy putti mounted and raised on a circular base playing a flute. The figure is well potted with typical style of the period with molded features with formed raised hair and with wings with feather detail attached to the back. The figure has various incised marks to the base along with an OS mark and with numbers 12/100. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market In good condition with light wear commensurate with age and use.
