About the Item

Tall Terracotta Sculpture by Michel Wohlfahrt (b. 1949). France, circa 2000 Material: Terracotta Dimensions: Height: 27.5 in (70 cm) • Width: 7.9 in (20 cm) • Depth: 7.9 in (20 cm) Condition: Excellent A powerful and expressive contemporary terracotta sculpture by Michel Wohlfahrt (b. 1949, Alsace, France). This tall, elegant figure captures a perfect balance between motion and emotion through its dynamic posture and refined modeling—hallmarks of Wohlfahrt’s poetic and deeply human sculptural language. Each of Wohlfahrt’s figures seems suspended between movement and stillness, caught in a moment of transformation. In every gesture, one senses a dance, an impulse, a cry, or a fleeting turn, revealing both tension and grace within the clay. For over fifty years, Wohlfahrt has remained deeply connected to the earth as his medium. Before turning to sculpture, he was a renowned potter, working across northeastern France and southern Tunisia with a wide range of clays and techniques. Eventually, he moved away from functional ceramics to dedicate himself entirely to sculpture—seeking freedom, spontaneity, and emotional depth in his creations. His figures, developed over three decades, reflect a lifetime of experience and emotion—austerity, humor, perfection, sorrow, absurdity, tenderness, and compassion. Wohlfahrt often paints his terracotta and bronze works in luminous, contrasting tones, transforming the raw material while emphasizing volume, rhythm, and movement. Since 1978, Michel Wohlfahrt’s work has been exhibited in museums, public gardens, and private collections throughout France and Europe, solidifying his reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary French sculpture.
