About the Item

Mid-century set of 2 pink and green flamingo ceramic figurines and decorative vase. The set features two beautifully detailed pink flamingos with their wings outstretched among lush green leaves, and a matching pool tray with a pink color and grassy borders. The vase features 2 Flamingos with stretched-out wings forming the front of the vase. Each comes with a gloss finish that highlights the rich pinks, greens, and gold accents, making it a striking statement piece. Bottom of large flamingo and vase reads: "Maddux of California" Bottom of large flamingo and vase reads: "Leftons Japan" Maddux of California was a ceramics company that operated in California from the 1930s to the 1970s. They produced a wide range of ceramic items, including decorative figurines, planters, and vases. Their designs were heavily influenced by the art deco and mid-century modern styles, and they were known for their bold and colorful glazes. Maddux of California pieces are highly collectible today, prized for their quality craftsmanship and distinctive designs. The company ceased production in the 1970s, but their legacy lives on through the many beautiful pieces that have survived over the years. Lefton is a mark found on pottery, porcelain, glass, and other wares imported by the Geo. Zoltan Lefton Company. The company started in 1941. George Lefton died in 1996 and members of the family continued to run the company. Lefton was sold to OMT Enterprises of Gardena, California, in 2005 and is now a division of that company. The name “Lefton” is still used. The company mark has changed through the years and a mark is usually used for a long period of time. Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery Coral Flamingo Centerpiece Planter Set 1929
By Waylande Gregory, Cowan Pottery
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Waylande Gregory Coral Flamingo Centerpiece and Planter, Cowan Pottery, Ohio, USA, 1928-1931. Marked "COWAN" under flamingo. Waylande Desantis Gregory (1905 Baxter Springs, Kansas – 1971, New Jersey) was one of the most innovative and prolific American art-deco ceramics sculptors of the early 20th century. His groundbreaking techniques enabled him to create monumental ceramic sculpture, such as the Fountain of the Atoms and Light Dispelling Darkness, which had hitherto not been possible. He also developed revolutionary glazing and processing methods, and was a seminal figure in the studio glass movement. The Cowan Pottery Studio was founded by R. Guy Cowan in Lakewood, Ohio, United States in 1912. It moved to Rocky River, Ohio in 1920, and operated until 1931, when the financial stress of the Great Depression resulted in its bankruptcy. Cowan Pottery produced both artistic and commercial work in a variety of styles influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Deco, Chinese ceramics, and modern sculpture. During its two decades of operation, a number of well-known Cleveland School artists worked with Cowan at the studio: Elizabeth Anderson, Arthur Eugene Baggs, Alexander Blazys, Paul Bogatay, Edris Eckhardt, Waylande Gregory, A. Drexler Jacobson, among many others. With the exception of Guy Cowan, himself, Waylande Gregory designed more pieces for the pottery than anyone else. Gregory joined R. Guy Cowan in Rocky River, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, in 1928, where he became the leading sculptor of the Cowan Pottery studio. Unlike his contemporaries at Cowan Pottery, who were primarily influenced by Viennese modern...
