About the Item
This charming mid-century French bronze sculpture depicts a young hunter in rustic attire, modeled in the sentimental and naturalistic spirit of 19th-century French figural sculpture. Cast circa 1950, the boy stands confidently with a feathered cap, cross-body satchel, and short trousers, holding a freshly hunted hare by the hind legs. His gentle smile and relaxed stance evoke the lighthearted rural romanticism popularized by artists such as Auguste Moreau and Emile Peynot.
Rendered in finely cast patinated bronze, the figure is mounted on a textured rectangular base simulating natural terrain. The surface retains a rich, deep brown patina, enhancing the sculpture’s depth and dimensionality.
Measuring 21 inches high by 7 inches wide, this figural bronze is an ideal accent for a traditional library, gentleman’s study, or curated console vignette. Unsigned, but likely cast after an earlier 19th-century model. Excellent vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age.

Victor Rousseau (1865-1954) was a Belgian sculptor and medalist. Rousseau was of Walloon heritage and descended from a line of stonemasons. He began carving stone at age 11, working at the site of the Law Courts of Brussels, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert. He later apprenticed under sculptor Georges Houtstont, and took classes at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
A winning competition entry for the Prix Godecharle in 1890 gave Rousseau the chance to travel in England, Italy, and two full years in France, after which he returned to the atelier of Belgian sculptor and teacher Charles van der Stappen...
