About the Item

This stylized figurative sculpture represents Gemini, the third sign of the zodiac. It features a pair of twins rendered in Press's signature modernist aesthetic, characterized by elongated forms and simplified, expressive facial features. Fred Press was a versatile American designer and sculptor who served as the chief designer for Rubel and Company on New York's Fifth Avenue. His work often bridged the gap between fine art and high-end giftware, earning him a "Good Design" award from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The piece is cast in solid bronze with a rich, aged patina. It often features subtle verdigris (greenish) highlights in the recesses of the casting, which accentuate the texture of the hair and clothing. The base is incised with the artist's signature, "© FRED PRESS", and the sign name "GEMINI" on the front of the integral plinth. Produced during the height of the Mid-Century Modern movement (circa 1950–1959), these sculptures were part of a complete 12-piece astrological set.
