Mid-Century Modern Solid Bronze Figural Award Sculpture on Formica Base, Otto Sirgo,
A solid bronze modernist figural award sculpture, depicting a stylized standing human form with elongated proportions and simplified modeling. The figure holds a circular relief medallion featuring a portrait identified as Otto Sirgo, the Cuban-born actor and director associated with Mexican theatre and telenovelas. The medallion bears the inscription “Otto Sirgo” along with the letters “ACRIN,” understood to reference the Asociación de Críticos de Norteamérica, indicating the sculpture was conceived as a commemorative or honorary award.
The bronze surface exhibits extensive original patina, with deep brown tones and areas of verdigris oxidation throughout, emphasizing the sculptural depth and period character. The sculpture is mounted on its original Formica over wood base, which shows visible chipping and edge losses, consistent with age, use, and the inherent fragility of the material. An incised mark or signature is present on the reverse of the figure but remains indistinct.
Unrestored and unpolished, the sculpture retains its authentic surface character and historical presence. A strong example of mid-century commemorative design, appealing to collectors of modernist sculpture, theatrical history, and institutional award objects.
Three examples are available, priced individually. Minor variations in patina and wear are present, as expected with separate castings.
