Description from Franklin MInt: House of Faberge Egg 13.45 troy ozs Sterling Silver Vermeil with Malachite Stand Franklin MInt, 1977 Emergence of Spring Filigree Butterfly Egg, 925 Vermeil Stand (18k Bee Brooch - This piece is missing), Numbered 23, Only 750 Made Amazing craftsmanship and beauty! This large sterling silver Emergence of Spring Modern Faberge egg is marked with the Franklin MInt hallmark, sterling 1977 and numbered 023/750 on butterfly wing inside the egg. A total of 750 were made. Inside the rim of the Stand, it is also hallmarked Sterling, 1977 and has the Franklin MInt FM symbol. It is solid sterling silver with vermeil gilt filigree and accented with six diamond-shaped malachite gems(one malachite is missing and 2 are chipped). Without the stand the height is 3" tall and with the stand the height is 4 and a half inches. Inside the egg is a beautiful hand-enameled multi-color sterling silver butterfly surprise and beneath it, a gilded silver long-stemmed rose resting on a lining of royal green velvet. The outside of the silver egg is decorated with pure gold and tiny genuine malachite gemstones. The tripod Stand is original to the egg and is also made of sterling silver vermeil with malachite accents. To open: Depress the malachite diamond on the opposite side of the egg from the hinge. The Franklin MInt has made many valuable collectibles but this is one of the most expensive and beautiful of all. And only 750 were made in 1977. It is unknown how many of these silver masterpieces have survived the melting pot during silver price spikes but the number can only decrease over time. Condition: As the egg and Stand are over 40 years old, there is some toning and tarnish. This can be removed if the new owner so desires but most collectors like a natural patina. One malachite piece on the egg is missing and 2 others are chipped. The bee brooch is missing Where It Was Made: The egg and Stand and bee pin were designed in the United States in the famous Faberge style of Russia, and made in the Netherlands. About the Egg Designer Herman DeRoos: De Roos joined the Franklin MInt sculptors' studio in 1971 where he remained for nine years. He studied in the Netherlands and has had several pieces commissioned by the Dutch royal Family. Born in Batavia, Djakarta, Dutch East Indies, Mr. DeRoos attended college in The Netherlands. He graduated with a Masters Degree in Goldsmithing in 1961. About the Franklin MInt: An American institution founded in 1964, the prolific Franklin MInt is known for its innovative design, meticulous attention to detail, and creating some of the highest-quality collectible products in the world. The Franklin MInt's archives include over 12,000 product lines, including limited edition Fine art sculptures. Vermeil (ver-MAY) is not the same thing at all as gold-filled or gold-plated. Vermeil means lasting quality and value. It is a layer of gold permanently fused to solid sterling silver, precious metal on precious metal. It will be stamped 925 for sterling. Also called gilded silver, it is a durable product that can be worn daily and passed on to the next generation.
