About the Item
This diminutive version of one of Raymond Delamarre's greatest sculptural works -- which depicts Mowgli (Rudyard Kipling's character) walking through the jungle accompanied by two lions -- supplies strong evidence of the artist's mastery of densely-figured Art Deco scenes. The bronze captures all the detail of his original sculpture -- a massive, six feet square relief panel that was commissioned byJacques Dembiermont, a French industrialist, in 1927. The panel was installed in the dining room of his villa in Grandcamp, and many years later was sold at auction. Delamarre was one of France's leading sculptors in the 1920s and 30s, and one of his greatest accomplishments is a pair of monumental angel figures that dominate "The Defense of the Suez Canal" monument situated near Ismailia, Egypt, memorializing the alliance of fighters who defended the region against Turkish invaders during World War I. The bronze is signed on the lower edge.
