About the Item
This is a small bronze sculpture of a nude female figure titled "Natura", as inscribed on the front of the base. The figure stands upright on a square plinth, modestly covering her chest with her hands, a pose often associated with representations of Venus or allegories of nature, modesty, or purity.
The signature on the back of the base reads "Schadow", which refers to Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764–1850), a renowned German neoclassical sculptor. Schadow was one of the leading sculptors in Berlin during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, famous for works like the Quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate and his celebrated portrait sculptures.
***UNCERTAIN if this piece is made by Schadow himself or modeled after him since many smaller bronzes of his sculptures were produced during the 19th century, especially in Berlin, as part of the neoclassical revival and for collectors who admired Schadow’s allegorical works.
