About the Item
This is a finely carved antique Japanese Netsuke, depicting a young boy in a patterned kimono with a large toad perched on his shoulder. The figure is delicately engraved and stained to highlight the intricate floral and geometric designs on the kimono, as well as the textured skin of the toad. The boy’s rounded face is gently smiling, giving the piece a serene and playful character.

Made of Ivory (stained and inked), in very good condition.
Late 19th Century.
These types of netsuke were used as functional toggles on traditional Japanese clothing (kimono), often depicting humorous or symbolic motifs. The toad is often associated with good luck and safe returns in Japanese folklore.
