About the Item
A Kissi Nomoli carved stone figure, a male with his hands wrapped around his knees, on a base; from the Kissi people of Sierra Leone.
Greyish brown patina, snout-like mouth, large nose, slight traces of abrasion.
Such figures were used in fertility rites to grant a good rice harvest. If the harvest was not satisfying, it might have happened that the stone figures were whipped, sometimes until they were damaged or even destroyed.
