About the Item

The sculpture is a study for a monument to the French writer Honoré de Balzac. It is often referred to as "Nude Study of Balzac with Folded Arms" or "Naked Balzac with Folded Arms". Rodin was commissioned by a literary society in 1891 to create a monument to Balzac. He worked on various studies for several years, modeling this nude version around 1892–1893. The sculpture depicts a stout, nude male figure with his arms crossed in a confident stance. Incised signature in the mould as shown. Dimensions: 16" W, 12" D and 28" H Condition: Please see detail photos. Condition is good overall with some encrusted display dust not affecting the powerful presentation.
