About the Item

Excellent pair of Caramogi or "mansion dwarfs" attributed to Jacques Callot for Richard Ginori, circa mid 1800s. The polychrome, hard-paste porcelain couple are hand-painted and in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks; they measure approximately 2.25"W x 2"D X 4.5"H. “Caramogi” are figurines depicting misshapen dwarves characters, called to entertain the courts of monarchs. The name ‘Caramogio’ was used to designate a very short or ridiculous person or dwarves. The most characteristic examples of Caramogi include those made in the eighteenth century at Tuscan porcelain manufactories in Doccia. These figurines are inspired by the “Varie figure Gobbi” by Jacques Callot, published in 1616 in Florence, Italy. Both figurines are signed under the base with a mark in blue under the glaze, with a crowned letter "N", a mark made by hand, with a brush tip. The sculptures can be dated between the 1830s and the 1890s. The artistic quality of the pieces is very high, note the beauty and sympathy at the same time of the faces and blushed cheeks; also, the full of folds of the clothing. Excellent all the way around! #4845 The Ginori factory in Doccia was one of the most prestigious European porcelain factories. It was founded by the will of the Marquis Carlo Ginori in 1737 in Doccia. The descendants of Carlo Ginori continued to be its owners and to manage it until 1896, when the merger with the Società Ceramica Richard of Milan took place, giving birth to the famous "Richard Ginori".
