About the Item

This impressive pair of sculptures depicts two timeless figures from Christian iconography, the Madonna lovingly holding the Child, and Saint Joseph with the young Jesus by his side. Each figure stands almost 145 cm (57 inches) tall, giving them a monumental, architectural presence, ideal for a chapel, gallery, or refined interior. The sculptures were hand-carved in Belgium in 1939 and are signed by E. Henrotte. They belong to the late Art Deco period, a time when sacred art embraced the stylized forms and rhythmic geometry of modernism. Their vertical lines, simplified volumes, and calm expression reveal a strong kinship with the Amsterdam School, particularly with the devotional works of Hildo Krop and his contemporaries. Executed in solid oak, both figures display a deep warm patina that enhances the expressive faces and drapery. Despite their monumental scale, they retain a sense of intimacy: the Madonna inclines her head in tender affection, while Joseph holds a lily symbolizing purity and protection, the Child looking upward in quiet trust. Originally commissioned for a Belgian church or private patron, this pair transcends its liturgical function and stands as a rare example of interwar modernist religious sculpture. The combination of spiritual subject, masterful craftsmanship, and Art Deco form makes these pieces a highly desirable acquisition for collectors of sacred art, sculpture, or European modernist design.
