About the Item

A striking and high quality pair of late silvered bronze busts of a Native American warrior and his maiden. Each bust is masterfully sculpted in silvered bronze, capturing a romanticized interpretation of Indigenous figures popular among French and American foundries of the period. The noble male figure wears an impressive feathered war bonnet adorned with deeply chased plumes and a stylized wave-motif band. His chest is richly decorated with layers of finely detailed bead necklaces and pendants. The female figure is equally captivating, featuring swept-back hair with a single braid, large hoop earrings, and a striking medallion necklace draped across her chest. Both busts are presented on elegant circular stepped black marble bases, enhancing their sculptural presence and providing a refined sense of balance. The high-relief modeling, exposed shoulders, and draped garments—each finished with intricate foliate bands—highlight the fine craftsmanship and romantic aesthetic of the time. The silvered finish evokes the brilliance of polished bronze while reflecting the accessible artistry of fine sculpture. This superb pair offers a compelling glimpse into the decorative tastes of the Belle Époque, where ethnographic subjects were reimagined with grandeur and poetic elegance.

Pair of Orientalist Bronze Busts by Cordier, 1861
By Charles Henri Joseph Cordier 1
Located in London, GB
Pair of Orientalist bronze busts by Cordier, 1861 French, 1861 Man: Height 42cm, width 32cm, depth 18cm Woman: Height 40cm, width 26cm, depth 16cm This impressive pair of bronze busts were made by the renowned French sculptor Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier (1827-1905). Known for his Orientalist works in bronze and marble, Cordier gained inspiration from his visits to Algeria. The male figure of this pair is after a study made during one of these visits. The figures form a wonderfully contrasting pair. The male bust wears a more sombre, downturned expression, whilst the female smiles almost sleepily. Both faces are expertly carved to achieve a human likeness, and the two figures are similarly dressed in embellished shirts and robes. The patination is exceptional throughout, providing light and shade to the facial features and garments. Gilding can also be seen on the woman’s earring...
