About the Item

Pair of Patinated Bronze Busts by Louis Hottot (French, 1829–1905) Circa late 19th century A fine and expressive pair of patinated bronze busts depicting a young peasant girl and boy, each modeled with remarkable realism and lively detail. The girl is shown smiling broadly, wrapped in a red kerchief and rustic shawl, while the boy scratches his head with one hand and studies something in his other palm, dressed in a worker’s cap and jacket. Both figures rest on circular bases of variegated marble. Signed L. Hottot to the reverse of each bust. Louis Hottot was a French sculptor active in Paris during the late 19th century, widely recognized for his genre and Orientalist figures. His works, often produced in bronze and terracotta, captured popular themes of the Belle Époque, ranging from peasant children to exoticized women. Examples of his busts can be found in private collections and appear at major European and American auctions.
