About the Item
A Plaster Cast of the Spinario or ‘Boy with Thorn’, 19th Century
Description:
The plaster cast after the original ‘Spinario’ now housed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori (Rome), also known as the ‘Boy with Thorn’ or ‘Fedele’, one of very few surviving Graeco-Roman Bronze sculptures from the Hellenistic period. The nude long haired youth is depicted seated upon a stump deep in concentration as he attempts to remove a thorn from the sole of his foot, his right foot placed flatly upon the ground whilst his left foot is pulled up by his left hand to rest upon his right knee, his left hand pulling at the supposed thorn lodged inside his upturned sole, his head angled to the left as he gazes downward focusing on his task, the whole in plaster and raised on a circular base.
