About the Item
Evocative wooden sculpture depicting a female figure, probably a Magdalene, made in the northern Italian area in the early 18th century. The work, carved in wood, gilded, and polychromed, has a highly expressive plastic rendering, especially in the animated and deeply etched robe, with broad and dynamic folds that lend vitality and rhythm to the figure.
The woman, full-figured and without her arms, is depicted with an uncovered leg in an advanced position, an element that recalls devotional iconographies related to the Compianto theme or altar scenes, in which Magdalene was often depicted in a penitent and dramatic attitude. The gilding is stably and evenly preserved, with an intense patina that enhances its antiquity. There is evidence of xylophagous attacks that occurred in the past, which are now completely inactive and stabilized. Dimensions: height 46 cm, depth 10 cm.
A work of considerable charm, ideal for collectors of Baroque wooden sculpture or for settings in historical and religious environments. International shipping available. For more information or photographs, please feel free to contact us.
