About the Item

Large, imposing terracotta, 0.94m high, with a nuanced gilt patina, depicting Rebecca, wife of Isaac and mother of Jacob and Esau. Titled on the terrace “Rebecca”, signed Cherc et Goldscheider, numbered 250.55, dated 1903. Friedrich Goldscheider founded the “Manufacture de porcelaine et fabrique de majolique Goldscheider” in 1885. The focus shifted from earthenware tableware and luxury porcelain objects to sumptuous polychrome terracotta sculptures. Collaboration extended to great artists such as Lorenzi, Chiparus and Bosse. Success was immediate, and spread to the rest of Europe and even to the United States. With their edifying naturalism, these works were part of the orientalist trend of the time: the Oriental or Berber figures were strikingly realistic. The factory closed in 1938. Stamp Goldscheider, Wien, reserved reproduction, on the back. A few chips at the base.
