Roger Desserprit
France (1925-1985)
Aged 25, Roger Desserprit exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Colette Allendy before taking part, in 1949, in the Salon des Réalités nouvelles alongside Arden Quin, Bresciani, Eielson, and Vardanega. Encouraged by the poet André Frénaud, he met Bazaine, Ubac and Vieira da Silva, whose workshops he frequented. Close to the Madi movement initiated by South American artists Carmelo Arden-Quin and Gyula Kosice, Desserprit embraces the idea of “concrete” painting, inscribed in a “real space”. In this sense, although not figurative, Desserprit's painting “does not abstract, it invents a new reality”. In a 1951 manifesto published in the journal "Art d'Aujourd'hui" founded by André Bloc, Roger Desserprit, co-signer, thus claims "an art that has become spatial through the penetration of light into the work, an art whose conception and execution are based on the simultaneity of aspects in the three dimensions not suggested, but tangible”.
