About the Item

Our very large (53.5 in, 136 cm) bronze statue by the French master, Jules Bertin (1826-1892), circa 1879, depicts the Roman goddess, Libertas (Liberty), standing upon a stylized globe highlighting the former eastern provinces of France. This exceptional work marks the loss of the Alsace and Lorraine regions to Prussia in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, and expresses the eventual return of these regions to France. Signed Jules Bertin Paris 1879.
