About the Item

Superb antique carved wooden statue depicting Saint Adrian, dressed as a Roman soldier and holding a round shield, his distinctive attribute. At his feet, a lion recalls the episode of his martyrdom, a symbol of courage and triumphant faith in the face of persecution. According to Christian tradition, Saint Adrian of Nicomedia was a Roman officer who converted to Christianity, arrested for his faith and executed around the 4th century. He has since been honored as the protector of soldiers and blacksmiths, often depicted in armor with his shield and lion, emblems of his bravery and fidelity to Christ. This sculpture demonstrates the expertise of 17th-18th century French workshops, where religious fervor was expressed in art that was both expressive and sincere. The saint's grave face and the loose drapes of his cloak reveal a provincial Baroque influence. The anonymous sculptor successfully captured the heroic nobility of the saint while preserving the touching simplicity characteristic of rural devotional art. The deep, warm, and ancient brown patina highlights the beauty of the wood and attests to its centuries-old authenticity. Probably from an altarpiece or votive niche, this work constitutes a rare example of French religious sculpture from the Baroque period. An authentic and expressive work of devotion, illustrating the courageous spirituality of the martyrdom of Saint Adrian. A distinctive piece, typical of French provincial religious sculpture, perfect for lovers of ancient sacred art and 17th-century sculpture.
