About the Item

Saint Barbara in carved wood, Renaissance structure (16th-17th century) with later polychromy Devotional wooden carving representing Saint Barbara, identifiable by the chalice with the Sacred Host she holds in her hand. The image displays characteristics typical of late 16th or early 17th-century Renaissance folk sculpture, with a frontal composition, naive features, and simple proportions. The current polychromy corresponds to a later intervention (18th-19th centuries), with rich floral motifs on the tunic and mantle, which gives the figure great visual appeal without obscuring its earlier origins. It also retains an antique metal crown, which enhances its grandeur. This work is of great interest due to its mixture of historical layers: Renaissance carving with Baroque repainting, evidence of its continued use in worship.
