About the Item
My interpretation of a Samburu herdsman stands as a sentinel of tradition, his life a tapestry woven with the threads of pastoral wisdom and the enduring spirit of the African savannah. This Samburu forms part of my evolving figurative series, celebrating the strength, heritage, and timeless presence of Africa’s tribal people. The Samburu people of Kenya possess a deeply symbiotic relationship with elephants, observing and understanding them in remarkable ways that mirror their own societal structures. They share a common matriarchal social system with elephants, where both Samburu and elephant herds are led by a female elder who holds the knowledge and responsibility for the group's survival. This unique parallel has fostered a profound respect and protection for these majestic creatures within the Samburu culture.
Limited edition of 24.
My bronze art and furniture are inspired by Africa’s wonderful wildlife and people. Taking inspiration from the bush and my previous experience as a safari guide, my creations strive to capture the essence and beauty of the animals and people I sculpt.
Each piece is exclusively sculpted, cast, finished and patinated by myself. Using the lost wax method of bronzing each sculpture is cast by me in my Black Dog Foundry.
With every sculpture individually hand finished and patinated no two sculptures will be exactly the same, with each piece having its own unique patina colouration. All works are signed and numbered editions.
I am a self-taught South African artist whose work is inspired by Africa’s wildlife, landscapes, and people. My years as a safari guide gave me an intimate connection to the bush — a place that taught me everything I know about shape, form, and movement. You can’t sculpt what you don’t feel, and every moment spent observing wildlife offers a lesson in balance, grace, and presence.
I am drawn to bronze — an ancient material with a living surface that changes, deepens, and gains character over time, much like the landscapes and creatures that inspire me. Each patina adds its own mood and individuality, ensuring every piece carries its own quiet story.
My work ranges from bird, wildlife, figurative, abstract to African sculpture and bespoke sculptural furniture and lighting. Each piece is entirely handcrafted — sculpted, cast, chased, and patinated by me in my own foundry using the traditional lost-wax method.
Every creation reflects Africa’s beauty, strength, and spirit — enduring in material and authentic in character.

Bronze sculpture of young girl from Kenya's Turkana tribe in traditional attire and characteristic hairdo. The Turkana tribe, nomadic by nature, are a Nilotic people native to the Turkana District in northwest Kenya, a semi-arid climate region bordering Lake Turkana in the east.

Whimsical Bronze Sculpture by Francisco del Toro, Mexico, 1992
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Expressive and evocative bronze sculpture by Francisco del Toro (Mexican, Guerrero, 20th century), signed Del Toro ’92. This one-of-a-kind piece showcases del Toro’s mastery in merging organic abstraction with emotional figuration, embodying both movement and introspection through its fluid, surreal form.
The elongated figure, perched on a solid stone base, reveals a captivating dialogue between smooth, polished surfaces and rugged, textured elements — a hallmark of del Toro’s sculptural language. The patinated bronze transitions in tone from deep forest green to earthy bronze, emphasizing the interplay between form, texture, and light.
Del Toro’s work often explores the human spirit’s resilience and transformation, with this particular sculpture exuding both strength and vulnerability. The head, seemingly emerging from raw material, evokes a timeless and almost mythological presence, while the sensuous curvature of the body connects to themes of fertility and creation found in Mexican modernist sculpture.
An exceptional example of Mexican contemporary bronze art, ideal for collectors of Latin American sculpture...
